Biography

Dr. Johnson is the technical group manager for the Radiological Materials and Technology Development Group. He completed his undergraduate studies in Mechanical Engineering at the US Naval Academy in 1986, and proceeded to serve as an officer in the navy for 7 years as a surface warfare officer in the naval nuclear propulsion program. Dr. Johnson then pursued graduate studies in materials science and engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he earned both a MS. and a PhD degree. His research was focused on the areas of synthesis and characterization of ceramic materials. After graduation, Brad was hired by Battelle to work as a research scientist at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland, WA.

Dr. Johnson has worked in the areas of chemically bonded ceramics, cement-based materials, high temperature structural ceramics, passivation of super-alloys, solid oxide fuel cell sealing glass, catalyst development, nanotechnology, infrared photonic materials, non-oxide materials synthesis, radiation detector development, and reactor materials technology. His technical interests are centered around materials characterization to understand and solve materials development and integration issues. He has expertise in the areas of materials synthesis, analytical electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction analysis.
